Conservation

The Trusts have actively engaged in conserving India’s rich heritage through supporting conservation of built heritage, art and film with a focus on encouraging training of conservators in these fields as well as strengthening conservation and preservation practices. Another key element has been the enhancement of public use and access to both tangible and intangible heritage.

Some of the projects undertaken under this vertical are:

  • Conservation of the Qutb Shahi Heritage Park, Hyderabad, undertaken by the Aga Khan Trust for Culture, India
  • The annual Film Preservation and Restoration Workshop conducted by the Film Heritage Foundation
  • Digitisation of India’s oldest peer-reviewed journal on culture ‘Marg’, made accessible through an online subscription model
  • Setting up South India’s first, full-fledged paper conservation lab at Roja Muthiah Research Library, Chennai
  • The Art Conservation Resurgence Project by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya, Mumbai, to strengthen the art conservation movement in India
